About the opera

Giuseppe Verdi: "Un ballo in maschera"

"E scherzo od è follia" – a jest or madness

Antonio Somma wrote the libretto based on the drama "Gustav III. ou le bal masqué" by Eugène Scribe. It deals with the circumstances of the assassination of the Swedish king in Stockholm on 17 March 1792. Gustav III of Sweden, nephew of Frederick the Great, was shot by an officer at a masked ball.

In the opera, the names of the protagonists have been changed: Count Riccardo of Warwick, Governor of Boston; the murderer Renato, the Governor's secretary; his wife Amelia; the fortune-teller Ulrica; the page Oscar; the sailor Silvano; the conspirators Samuel and Tom.

The scenes are set in and around Boston. "Un ballo in maschera" was premiered on 17 February 1859 at the Teatro Apollo in Rome.

Riccardo (tenor) secretly loves Amelia (soprano), the wife of his friend Renato (baritone). She, too, is invited to the ball. "La rivedrà nell'estasi", sings Riccardo in joyful anticipation. He wishes to consult the seer Ulrica about his future and disguises himself as a fisherman. Ulrica conjures the demon. She promises the sailor Silvano good fortune. Amelia, too, wishes to consult fortune. She wants to forget Riccardo. To cure her heartache, Ulrica prescribes a magic herb. She prophesies death for Riccardo. He laughs at her: "E scherzo od e follià, si fatta profezia". Ulrica: "The first person to offer you his hand in greeting today will be your murderer!"

Amelia goes in search of the root of the herb. Riccardo wants her love; she rejects him. Eventually, she does make a confession: "Ti amo". Renato, his face hidden beneath a cloak, warns her of the conspirators. Renato assures Riccardo that he will lead Amelia, veiled, back to the city. Samuel and Tom lie in wait for Riccardo, who turns out to be Renato. Amelia lets her veil fall. Renato recognises an infidelity. The conspirators: "La tragedia mutò in commedia". Facing death, she wishes to take her son in her arms. Renato swears revenge. Samuel, whose brother was slain by Riccardo, wants to carry out the deed. But Amelia is to draw the lot from the urn: Renato! The page Oscar invites everyone to the masked ball. The three appear in blue costumes with a red sash over the left shoulder. The watchword is "Morte!" Riccardo is warned in a letter. He ignores the warning. Oscar betrays Riccardo's disguise: black domino with a pink ribbon on the chest; Amelia in a white domino. She begs him to flee. He puts her off: tomorrow she is to travel with Renato to her homeland, England. Renato stabs Riccardo. With his last breath, he assures his friend that Amelia remained faithful to him. Renato repents. Riccardo's last words: "Addio diletta America."
