About the opera

W.A. Mozart: "Cosi fan tutte" – Dramma giocoso in 2 acts

Thus Do They All, or The School for Lovers

The idea for this lighthearted game of intrigue and disguise came from Emperor Joseph II. Mozart's librettist Lorenzo da Ponte wrote a carefree farce about gallantry and infidelity in casual relationships. The "Dramma giocoso" was first performed on 26 January 1790 at the Vienna National-Hoftheater, today's Burgtheater. The story is set in Naples around 1780.

The officers Ferrando and Guglielmo sing the praises of their fiancées' unshakeable fidelity. The old philosopher Don Alfonso voices his doubts. He proposes a wager to the impetuous lovers: for a single day they are to follow his suggestions, thereby confirming his suspicion that women are inclined to be unfaithful. 100 zecchini are at stake for the winning side.

The sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella are hopelessly in love with their betrothed and can hardly wait for their wedding day. Don Alfonso has to disappoint them: the officers are to go off to war. The farewell is heartbreakingly sad.

The chambermaid Despina takes a more relaxed view of fidelity. All the more willingly she allows Don Alfonso to bribe her, and she invites the disguised lovers into the house to pay their respects to the sisters. The wager seems half won already: for the time being, the ladies remain steadfast. The gentlemen feign dying of lovesickness.

Despina urges the sisters to try, at least playfully, their luck with Don Alfonso's wealthy friends, and even to swap partners: Dorabella with the dark-haired Guglielmo, Fiordiligi with the fair-haired Ferrando. In the rose serenade Dorabella soon weakens, while Ferrando meets with a cold reception from Fiordiligi. Don Alfonso wants to resolve the entanglements with a "double wedding". Despina slips into the role of a notary who has the marriage contracts signed. No sooner is this done than the soldiers resolve the confusion, as well as the secret of the disguises, which Don Alfonso had kept from Despina. Through the emotional rollercoaster of fidelity and infidelity, both couples have learned their lesson. Don Alfonso can pocket his zecchini. In the happy ending, the original couples are happily reunited.
