About the opera
Fidelio: Ludwig van Beethoven
A Spanish state prison in the 18th century. Florestan, a freedom fighter, is the victim of the brutal governor Don Pizarro and is held in a dark dungeon. Leonora has searched everywhere for her beloved Florestan and now believes she will find him in the prison. Disguised as a young man named Fidelio, she finds employment with the jailer Rocco. His daughter Marzelline falls in love with Fidelio and wants to marry him. Rocco has no objection to a marriage and confides a secret to his prospective son-in-law: in the dungeon there is a vault that no one may enter. A prisoner is held there on Pizarro's orders. Could it be Florestan? Leonora wonders.
Suddenly Pizarro appears. He has received a letter warning him that the minister will visit the prison, as he suspects victims of arbitrary violence there. Pizarro must act to cover his tracks: Florestan is to be murdered. Rocco refuses to carry out the deed, but promises to prepare everything. Pizarro decides to kill Florestan himself. Rocco takes Fidelio down with him to the secret vault. There, chained to the wall, hangs an emaciated prisoner: Leonore recognises her Florestan. Then Pizarro appears in order to stab Florestan ...
Beethoven's only opera is a tribute to woman, to her love and fidelity. At its premiere, Fidelio received only a very muted response from the audience and was therefore revised several times. In the meantime, however, it has come to be recognised as a pinnacle of operatic art.
