Day 1: Switzerland – Riccione
Journey via the Gotthard route through Ticino, with a lunch stop at a grotto. Onward drive past Milan and Bologna to the Adriatic coast at Riccione. Welcome aperitif and dinner at the hotel. (3 nights at the Grand Hotel Des Bains*****).
Day 2: Ravenna
Surrounded by magnificent pine forests, Ravenna was the last capital of the Western Roman Empire. It came under Western Roman, Gothic and Byzantine rule in turn. Above all, its vast and precious mosaic decorations are among the richest and best-preserved works of art of the Byzantine era in Italy. Mosaic art remains the hallmark of the local crafts to this day and is nurtured in numerous workshops and even taught in schools. Together with your local guide, you will marvel at the Basilica di San Vitale, with its splendid, well-preserved 6th-century Byzantine mosaics, and the Basilica Sant'Apollinare in Classe, renowned for its impressive apse mosaic. You will then enjoy lunch in Ravenna. In the afternoon, you will have ample time to explore on your own. Afterwards, return to Riccione and dinner at the hotel.
Day 3: Urbino
Today you will travel to the Marche region. You will set out to explore Urbino, the capital of the Italian Renaissance and birthplace of the painter Raphael. The historic centre within the city walls dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries and is home to many great works of Italian art and architecture. Urbino is beautifully situated between two hills and offers a breathtaking panorama of tiled roofs, churches and the valley below. Lunch in the old town of Urbino, followed by free time. Return to Riccione. To round off your stay, a sparkling gala evening awaits you at the hotel, with musical entertainment.
Day 4: Riccione – Switzerland
With lovely memories and an anecdote or two in your luggage, you begin your journey home to Switzerland today.
